Cancellation of routine Blood Tests

Yesterday, Roche Pharmaceutical made contact with a number of pathology labs to report a national disruption to the supply chain. Roche are the main supplier of pathology equipment and consumables. As a result all practices in Sussex have been asked by NHS England to immediately reduce requests for blood tests by delaying tests for routine monitoring and consider clinical need to allow contingency in the wider system to potentially provide capacity.

With immediate effect we must cancel all routine blood tests booked until at least 19 October. For example, patients booked for annual monitoring for long term conditions, and defer their appointment for 2-4 weeks.

We can only carry out urgent blood tests, to include – chemo-related, high risk drug monitoring, pre-op bloods if this would impact on planned admissions/diagnostics, urgent bloods that might impact on admission or treatment options, or if the GP feels there is an urgent clinical need.

We know that this will create concern and frustration and for that we are sorry. Unfortunately, it is currently a necessary step to allow the very limited testing facility to be optimally used. We hope that this is only a temporary situation and that the national issue can be resolved as soon as possible. We will continue to keep you updated and would ask that you contact the practice after 19th October to re-book should you have a blood test cancelled.
